Paula Robison with Brannen #32

"It was the summer of 1978. The National Flute Association was holding its Convention in Washington DC and I was there as a performer. One day on the exhibit floor a man approached me and opened his raincoat with a very mischievous look on his face! Inside was one of the most beautiful flutes I’d ever seen. It was not solid silver or solid gold, as most flutes were then, but a mixture of the two! The man said “Come to the Brannen Brothers booth and try one” and walked away. “Brannen Brothers?” I thought…”Oh yes…they were with Powell…they have just gone into business for themselves. I’ll head over there right now!” Sure enough, as soon as I tried a Brannen flute I knew that it would help me to sing in the new way I was searching for. The combination of gold tubing, silver mechanism, and Cooper scale was unbeatable, as well as the impeccable craftsmanship and design, with Randy Bowman’s elegant logo on the headjoint. Randy said to me “Go with gold.” I thought he had a good idea there.

That afternoon several of us went into the bathroom in the Brannen suite, one of the only private places to try the flute (how things have changed since then!) and even though the shower curtain got in the way and even though everyone was listening eagerly, close up, I could feel the resonance, and decided to go for it and to order a Brannen flute right away. At the booth I was told that the waiting time was four weeks for a new instrument. I took a deep breath, and ordered mine. I was thrilled to hear that it would be number 32, a special number for me as I regard the age of 32 as an especially beautiful time in a woman’s life. By the time I revisited the booth the next day the waiting time had jumped to 3 years! I guess the word had gotten out!

It took a while for me to get used to playing a gold instrument, and Bickford Brannen was wonderful about making a group of headjoints for me try. I was looking for both warmth and brilliance. Bick knew my playing well, even from the time he was with Powell Flutes, and as I hesitated, chose again, then hesitated, he smiled. Finally when I made my choice he said “I knew you’d choose that one! I made it especially for the way you play.” That really touched my heart! Bick was right. #32 with his headjoint had possibilities I hadn’t dreamed of, and the friendship with Bick and Bob and all the artisans at Brannen Flutes has been a bright part of my life for many years since then.

Brannen Brothers #32 was my voice for all the middle era Vanguard recordings, the MusicMasters recordings, all the Chamber Music Society performances of that era, the subject of some of the best Christian Steiner photo portraits ever, my constant companion for all the Orpheus trio tours around the world, the “CBS Sunday Morning” episode viewable on YouTube, as well as countless Mozart Concerti, Ibert concerti, and some significant first performances of Leon Kirchner solo and chamber works.

I’ll miss my friend very much, but I know that this marvelous flute will soon light up another player’s performing life and bring joy to many listeners too."
