ICONIC WOMEN IN FLUTE HISTORY

Histories of instruments are deeply influenced by the unique artistry of the musicians who played them. ‘Iconic Women in Flute History’ is a series of recitals, created by Noemi Gyori, that celebrate female flutists who became leading artists in the historically male-dominated field. Motivated to push boundaries, these women have profoundly shaped the flute world into what
it is today.

The present programme focuses on Anna Amalia of Prussia, Cora Cardigan, Frances Blaisdell and Patricia Lynden, who opened doors and paved the way for many imaginative and outstanding contemporary female flute players, who continue to uncover and challenge the instrument’s possibilities, enchanting audiences and inspiring leading composers. The works presented in this programme pay tribute to each of these iconic female pioneers and showcase the instrument’s versatility from the early 1800s through the 20th Century.

Anna Amalia of Prussia: Sonata in F for flute and continuo (11 min)

Carl Reinecke: Sonata Undine op.167 (20 min)
