Haynes Headjoint Cuts

Haynes offers three Custom headjoint cuts, each designed around a different balance of warmth, resistance, and response.

P Cut

The P Cut (Piedmont Cut) is the classic Haynes headjoint and serves as the standard option on most Haynes flutes. It is known for its warm, rich, and flexible sound, offering a naturally expressive playing experience with smooth response and tonal versatility.

This cut is ideal for players who want a traditional Haynes color with plenty of depth and adaptability.

N Cut

The N Cut (Nagog Cut) features a slightly thicker riser, which adds resistance and enhances tonal color without limiting articulation. The result is a more focused, complex sound with added depth and projection.

Many flutists choose the N Cut for its balance of control, richness, and expressive power across all registers.

S Cut

The S Cut (Stanhope Street Cut) is designed to expand accessibility to the Haynes sound with an easier response and larger tonal “target.” It reduces physical demands while increasing flexibility in color, dynamics, and projection.

This cut blends depth and brilliance while offering a more approachable feel, making it a great option for players seeking versatility with less resistance.

Which Haynes Headjoint Is Right for You?

Players drawn to warmth and tradition often prefer the P Cut, while those wanting more resistance and color gravitate toward the N Cut. The S Cut is ideal for flutists looking for an easier response with expanded tonal possibilities.
