- “About Damn Time” - What better way to begin this list than with one of our all-time favorite flutists - Lizzo! In Lizzo's "About Damn Time," the flute serves as a dynamic and energetic addition to the already lively track. Lizzo's playing is crisp and precise, with each note punctuated by a sharp attack and clean release. Plus have we mentioned we have a signed stand from Lizzo in our office? Stop by to check it out!
- “There is a light” by Kacey Musgraves - Performed by flutist Jim Hoke, this solo comes in during the instrumental break towards the end of the song and features extended techniques including harmonics and flutter tonguing. The solo is dreamy and atmospheric, adding a mystical touch to the song.
- “Say Goodbye” by Dave Matthews Band - This song opens with a trilling solo in which the flute trades off with the guitar, played by the talented LeRoi Moore. It's a testament to Lizzo's skill as a flutist to be able to convey so much feeling in such a short solo.
- “Locomotive Breath” by Jethro Tull - We could write an entire list of our favorite Jethro Tull flute solos, but our top choice has to be “Locomotive Breath.” Played by Ian Anderson, this solo builds in intensity as Anderson's playing becomes more intricate. He plays a series of fast and fluid runs, incorporating both melodic and rhythmic elements, before launching into a high-pitched wail that soars over the driving rhythm section. The solo is a signature moment of the song and a showcase of Anderson's virtuosity on the flute. Check out Ian's interview on Flute Unscripted!

Oh come on, no “Going Up the Country” ??
Somebody likes Lizzo an awful lot and doesn’t seem to know about one of the greatest rock song of the 60’s with a flute solo,
Going Up the Country from Canned Heat along with what’s already been said Marshall Tucker Band that has a number of great flute, rock songs.
Another great Band that has a flute in it, though it’s may be a different type of flute, is Rusted Root in their terrific hit Send Me On My Way.
What’s your favorite flute solo? We would love to take a listen!
You should listen to some Marshall Tucker Band and rewrite your list.
