The Difference Between a COA and an Overhaul: A Flute Repair Guide
Keeping your flute in top shape means regular maintenance, but how do you know when you need a COA versus an overhaul? Here’s a quick guide to help you understand the difference.

What’s a COA?
COA stands for Clean, Oil, and Adjust. This is routine maintenance recommended once or twice a year. During a COA, your technician:
-
Cleans the interior and exterior of the instrument
 -
Oils the key mechanism
 -
Adjusts the tension of the pads and keys
 -
Ensures proper sealing and response for all keys

It’s perfect for flutes that are in good condition but need a tune-up to stay that way. Check out our COA video here!
What’s an Overhaul?
An overhaul is a full restoration, ideal for older flutes or instruments that haven’t been serviced in years. It includes:
-
Complete disassembly and deep cleaning of the instrument
 -
Replacement of all pads, corks, and felts
 -
Full regulation, oiling, and adjustments

Think of it as hitting reset on your flute, bringing it back to like-new playability.
Which Do You Need?
-
Choose a COA if your flute plays well but just needs regular care.
 -
Choose an Overhaul if your flute is leaking, sluggish, or hasn’t been serviced in a long time.
