Artist Bios
Created by PhD and DMA José Fernando Ramírez, this project was born from a passion for rediscovering the rich repertoire written for traditional Colombian estudiantina ensembles. By combining musicological research with vibrant performance, La Nueva Estudiantina revives music preserved in historical archives and brings it back to life for today’s audiences.
Although rooted in Colombia, the project embraces a global perspective, sharing the beauty, lyricism, and rhythmic vitality of Colombian traditions with listeners everywhere.
In Fall 2026, La Nueva Estudiantina will release a new book with Editorial EAFIT, exploring Colombian musical heritage and the important mid-20th-century composer competitions sponsored by Fabricato and Indulana Rosellón, events that helped shape an entire generation of Colombian composers.
Formed in 2020, the ensemble is made up of six professional musicians dedicated to reconstructing and sharing this unique repertoire.
After performances in Colombia, La Nueva Estudiantina will tour the United States in 2026, continuing its mission to connect Colombian musical traditions with the global musical community
