Detroit Steel was commissioned by Ashley Stanley for her Hustle Harder project, which aimed to highlight stories and experiences from the state of Michigan. In many ways, Detroit stands as a symbol for and cultural capital of the state of Michigan. For decades the story of Detroit in the media focused only on the bleak, but its history and its people are so much more than this singular narrative of industrial and economic decline. For me as a Michigander, Detroit Steel is about the extraordinary grit, strength, and resolve of the people of Detroit, and the incredible history of this place that is still being written.
