Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Strings Op. 45 (Flute and Piano)
Description
Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Strings Op. 45 (Flute and Piano) By Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006), Published by Novello/Hal Leonard.
Includes flute part and piano reduction.
Having come of age in the 1930s and 1940s in England, it’s no surprise that the music of Malcolm Arnold (1921 - 2006) screams of sarcasm, dissonance, and a certain cheeky-ness, a reflection of post WWII Europe. The tonal world created by Arnold in his Flute Concerto No. 1, written in 1954, evokes melancholy, tranquility, playfulness, and defiance. By far the best part of this concerto is the raucous third movement, clocking in at just over 2 minutes of rhythmic syncopation and jazzy harmonies. While relatively unknown, this concerto should be considered a viable Concerto Competition entry because of its dazzling display of fireworks, variation of styles, and its smaller orchestration (strings only).
This Piece made it onto our list of The 19 Best Flute Concertos Not by Mozart.
