Empowering Flute Teachers: The Flute Center's Teacher Spotlight Series

by Alex Xeros

I was thrilled to join the team at Flute Center of New York in 2020, and I was even more excited to learn about their club for teachers, ClubFC. As I worked with more and more flute teachers, I became inspired to ask: what more can Flute Center do to uplift and empower these incredible educators? How can I serve this community better? With these questions in mind, I took on the role of the first official ClubFC Coordinator, acting as a dedicated liaison and launching new initiatives for ClubFC teachers.

One of my proudest accomplishments in the past few years has been the Teacher Spotlight Series. What started as a simple interview series has grown into a full-fledged event series, created "for teachers, by teachers." Our very first live event featured the legendary flute pedagogue Patricia George, who shared valuable insights into her new Top Octave Book and how best to integrate it into lessons. It was a fantastic start to the series, which has since covered a wide range of topics, including "Diversifying Flute Repertoire" with Rebecca Johnson and Brian Dunbar, "Practicing Like a Pro" with Gina Luciani, and a live Q&A with Sir and Lady Galway. The Teacher Spotlight Series is both informative and fun, and it never fails to inspire and uplift.

Another goal of the Teacher Spotlight Series is to give our teachers opportunities to perform and celebrate each other's artistry. To that end, we recently hosted our first ClubFC Teacher's Recital! Flute teachers from all over the country sent in recordings, which we compiled into a virtual concert that was a huge success. You can still watch it on Youtube! And this summer, we're extending the performance opportunity again and inviting teachers to submit their recordings, which will premiere in late July. Don't miss your chance to be featured in this exciting event!

Our most recent Teacher Spotlight Events include:

Nicole Riner's Guide to Extended Techniques for Beginners

Morgann Davis' Teacher Spotlight Interview

Katharina Martini's Resonating Body Workshop

The Galways' Live Q&A Session

The Teacher Spotlight Events are all 100% free to attend, and all ClubFC members are invited to present a topic they are passionate about. If you aren’t a member yet, we would love to have you join! There are no fees, gimmicks or strings attached, just industry-leading service and perks for you and your students. You can find all of the information and an application to join here. The Flute Center strives to serve and foster our flute community, and I am honored to be able to contribute to that mission through the Teacher Spotlight Series.

At Flute Center, we're committed to serving and nurturing our flute community, and I'm honored to be able to contribute to that mission through the Teacher Spotlight Series. It's been amazing to see so many talented and dedicated teachers come together to share their knowledge and experience. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a new teacher just starting out, there's always something to learn and something to share. I can't wait to see what we'll accomplish together in the future!
