Masterclass Notes

Throughout this masterclass, Beomjae emphasizes the importance of patience, slow practice, and prioritizing the musical line over technical difficulty.

  • Sonata for Flute and Piano by Francis Poulenc (0:04 - 23:15): Beomjae Kim works on achieving an open, relaxed sound in the upper register (2:33 - 3:40). He stresses that forcing air can make the tone sound narrow, especially in a concert hall setting. He also provides a detailed method for practicing double tonguing, advising the student to focus on the air stream first without the tongue to ensure a smooth musical line (4:37 - 8:08).
  • 3 Preludes for Unaccompanied Flute by Robert Muczynski (24:25 - 39:47): Beomjae Kim guides on capturing the jaunty character of the piece. He highlights the difference between staccato and tenuto markings and encourages the student to use the diaphragm to support shorter notes rather than relying solely on the tongue (25:53 - 26:22). He suggests that for difficult passages, practicing with rhythmic variations and slow, deliberate movements helps transform the piece from an exercise into a musical performance (31:48 - 33:55).
  • Grand Polonaise Op. 16 by Theobald Bohm (40:08 - 1:02:35): The focus shifts to maintaining elegance over sheer virtuosity (53:36). Kim demonstrates how to handle long, complex scale passages by grouping notes (e.g., 4+4+6) to ensure evenness and clarity (1:00:30 - 1:02:24). He reiterates the importance of staying relaxed, even during technically demanding sections, to keep the performance expressive and engaging for the audience.
