John Ranck played principal flute with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra for a decade. He also played in the pit orchestra of the Franklin Performing Arts Company musicals and second flute/piccolo for their annual Nutcracker production. An adjunct flute professor at Northeastern for several decades, he continues to teach privately. Assistant Director of the Composers’ Conference’s Chamber Music Workshop for more than a decade, he also served as President of the Pappoutsakis Memorial Fund, which presents the annual Pappoutsakis Flute Competition.

His teachers include Thomas Nyfenger (Doctor of Musical Arts), Samuel Barong (Master’s Degree in Flute Performance), and Fred Schroeder (Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance), and non-degree study with Robert Dick, András Adorján, and Henry Zlotnik. In addition to his Practice Toolkit, his other publications include Nutcracker Piccolo Pointers and Shall we Dance: or finger choreography for Jeanjean's Études Modernes.

His second undergraduate degree is in Slavic Literature, which came in handy for his translation of composer Nicolai Tcherepnin's memoirs for the Tcherepnin Society and is proving helpful in his research on Joseph Guillou, a flutist who taught at the Paris Conservatory and spent the last part of his life St. Petersburg, Russia.
