Masterclass Notes

This masterclass features acclaimed flutist Nina Assimakopoulos providing personalized instruction to two students, focusing on technical refinement and musical storytelling.

Key moments and highlights:

  • Bowing Technique (3:40 - 4:20): Nina coaches the student on different, more elegant ways to hold the flute while bowing on stage to improve presentation.
  • Vibrato and Breath Control (5:52 - 10:46): Nina works with Alan on controlling vibrato speed using the abdominal muscles (likened to a "dog pant" exercise) rather than just the throat, and how to vary vibrato speed based on pitch height.
  • Nasal Breathing (11:02 - 13:38): The instructor emphasizes the benefits of breathing through the nose—triggering the parasympathetic nervous system for a calmer stage presence and preventing dry mouth.
  • Artistic Phrasing (14:11 - 17:50): Nina challenges the student to think of musical lines as "questions" or "answers" and to incorporate specific character-driven narratives (inspired by Harry Potter) into the performance.
  • Rhythmic Pulse and Body Movement (27:23 - 33:15): Working with Anna, Nina addresses rhythmic consistency, encouraging the student to move away from vertical "bouncing" and instead use fluid, lateral body movements to improve the flow of the phrase.
  • Breath Efficiency (37:39 - 46:11): The masterclass concludes with a focus on eliminating audible breathing noises. Nina identifies that the tongue position (the "E" vowel position) and high-velocity air intake were causing tension and noise, and teaches the student to "engage and lift" the abdominal wall to facilitate a natural, silent intake of air.
