In 1860 Rietz moved to Dresden, where he was active as court Kapellmeister and later also assumed the directorship of the Conservatory. One finds works of all genres in his oeuvre. The Sonata in G minor op. 42 for flute and piano was originally published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1876.
