Sebastian Penso Stegemann is a performing artist, music educator, and business administrator currently based in New York City.

While completing his undergraduate studies, Sebastian played in the Baylor University Orchestra under the direction of Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and the BU Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Eric Wilson. While in both ensembles he participated in various notable performances including televised special A Baylor Christmas 2023, BU Orchestra’s debut performance at Bass Performance Hall in Fort-Worth, Texas, and you can hear him playing second flute and assistant principal in BU Wind Ensemble and clarinetist Julian Bliss’ album Divine Mischief. He currently plays with the New York University Orchestra under the direction of David Bloom.

In addition to his orchestral experience, Sebastian has a love for chamber music. In 2024 he participated in the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival, where he met founding members of his newly developed woodwind quintet, Prism, which aims to focus on music by lgbtq+ composers in addition to the standard quintet repertoire that we all know and love.

Sebastian enjoys playing flute repertoire from all time periods and has played in masterclasses for flutists such as Sylvia Careddu, Alberto Navarra, Brandon Patrick George, Marina Piccinini, and in 2025 he was a student at the Complete 21st Century Flutist music festival held in Mondovì, Italy.

Sebastian is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Flute Performance at New York University, studying with Dr. Meghan Bennett. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Flute Performance and minor in Business Administration from Baylor University, studying with Dr. Charlotte Daniel. Upon graduating from Baylor, he received the Outstanding Graduating Instrumentalist award from the School of Music for his musicianship, academic prowess, and citizenship.

Outside of music, Sebastian enjoys practicing his calligraphy, drawing, reading a good book, or obsessing over European royals (both historical and present)!
