Flute Maintenance 101: How to Clean Your Flute
You just got your new flute - but wait, how do you clean it? Keeping your flute clean is essential for maintaining its sound quality and longevity. Regular cleaning prevents moisture buildup, pad damage, and tarnish. Here’s a simple guide to keeping your flute in top condition.
1. Swab the Interior
After each playing session, use a cleaning rod with a soft, absorbent cloth to remove moisture from the inside of the flute. Insert the cloth through the rod’s slit, twist it, and gently push it through each section of the flute.

2. Wipe the Exterior
Use a microfiber or lint-free cloth to wipe away fingerprints and oil from the keys and body. Avoid using liquid cleaners, as they can damage the finish.
3. Check the Pads
Look for moisture buildup or stickiness on the pads under the keys. If they appear damp, lightly press a piece of absorbent paper under the key and gently close it to soak up excess moisture.
4. Store It Properly
Always keep your flute in its case when not in use. Make sure to latch the case to prevent accidental falls and damage.
5. Avoid Common Mistakes
-
Never use excessive force when cleaning or assembling your flute.
-
Don’t use alcohol or harsh chemicals; they can degrade pads and plating.
-
Avoid touching the pads directly with your fingers.
-
Keep flute away from water and other liquids. Your flute does not need a bath!
