Jiwoon Choi, Logistics Associate

Logistics Associate

Jiwoon Choi is an active and versatile musician from southeast Michigan. While her love of music first started off as piano lessons at the age of 5, it quickly evolved into the passion for the flute.

During her studies at Michigan State University, she was a consistent member of the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Sedatole and Kevin Noe. She has also performed with local Michigan-based symphony orchestras and has been a part of various chamber ensembles, where she emphasizes outreach and engagement in the Lansing community. She has performed in masterclasses for notable flutists such as Bonita Boyd, Lorna McGhee, Jasmine Choi, and others. As a supporter of new music, she has been a part of both world and U.S. premieres through Fresh Inc. Festival. Her solo recitals at Ohio State strived to feature music from underrepresented and living composers.

During her time at Ohio State University, she was the Co-President of the Central Ohio Flute Association, where she served as webmaster, hosted an “Extended Technique for Beginners” session, and competed in the final round of the COFA  young artist competition. She performed regularly with large ensembles such as the OSU Wind Symphony, OSU Symphony Orchestra, and Flute Troupe. Outside of school groups, she formed smaller chamber groups, such as a woodwind quintet and a flute quartet. Both chamber ensembles performed for Imani Winds and played throughout Columbus, OH. Dr. Choi explored a large range of teaching experiences at OSU including being a flute counselor at the HS Flute Workshop, teaching private piano lessons, and as a Graduate Teaching Associate teaching music theory and aural skills. She also served as the Secretary of the Graduate Music Student Association, where the student organization acted as a liaison between the students and faculty and created a welcoming environment for new graduate students. Her cumulative document from OSU includes a critical edition of Alan Sapp’s Suite for Two Flutes and Piano, which combined her many interests for the flute, piano, and chamber music.

Jiwoon holds her Bachelor’s and Masters of Music in Flute Performance from Michigan State University and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University.  Her main instructors include Richard Sherman and Katherine Borst Jones. She now resides in Rahway, NJ. During the day as logistics associate, she can be found working in the back room of Flute Center. Outside of Flute Center hours, she can be found teaching and performing throughout NJ, playing Animal Crossing, and enjoying a cup of coffee.
