Mike Mower, a British national, originally studied classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Whilst at the RAM, his self-taught interests included learning the saxophone, jazz improvisation and composition. For years he worked freelance as a studio session musician and arranger in London, he played in West End shows on flutes clarinets and saxes and toured as a sax sideman with Tina Turner, The Style Council and Björk, but his career took off mostly as a band leader.

In 1985 Mike founded Itchy Fingers, the internationally renowned saxophone quartet which won the BBC jazz band of the year and led to recording contracts with Virgin and ENJA record labels. He subsequently led numerous jazz ensembles, playing his own compositions from quartet to big band all over the world.

Flute has always been Mike’s main instrument and his published catalogue for the flute is extensive, from beginner books on exam syllabuses to advanced recital works, concertos and flute ensembles. He has been commissioned to write for such notables as James Galway, the USAF band, BBC Radio Orchestra, NDR & Stockholm big bands the Swedish Wind Ensemble and for University consortiums throughout the USA.

Mike’s compositional style draws from his extensive involvement with classical music, jazz, latin, pop and commercial music and is at times uncatagorisable. Often exciting, vibrant, and complex, his compositions are always accessable to a wide variety of listeners. His music is published by Itchy Fingers Publications.
